What Is Galvanizing?

A bonded defence against corrosion

Galvanizing protects iron and steel by applying a coating of zinc to the steel surface. In hot-dip galvanizing, fabricated steel is immersed in molten zinc.

The zinc reacts with the steel to form zinc-iron alloy layers and a protective outer zinc layer. The result is a durable, bonded and abrasion-resistant coating.

Unlike coatings that provide only a barrier, zinc also provides sacrificial protection. If the surface is scratched, surrounding zinc can preferentially corrode and help protect exposed steel.

Why Protect Steel?

The Process

How hot-dip galvanizing works

Each stage prepares the steel for a clean reaction with zinc and a consistent finished coating.

  1. 01

    Inspection & preparation

    Fabricated steel is checked for galvanizing suitability, including correct venting and drainage for hollow or enclosed components.

  2. 02

    Degreasing & cleaning

    Oil, grease, dirt and organic contaminants are removed so the zinc can react with a clean steel surface.

  3. 03

    Pickling

    An acidic solution removes rust, mill scale and other surface oxides.

  4. 04

    Fluxing

    Flux helps prevent oxidation before immersion and promotes the reaction between clean steel and molten zinc.

  5. 05

    Hot-dip galvanizing

    The steel is immersed in molten zinc, typically at approximately 450°C, forming bonded zinc-iron alloy layers and an outer zinc layer.

  6. 06

    Withdrawal & cooling

    The component is withdrawn at a controlled rate, excess zinc is managed, and the galvanized steel is allowed to cool.

  7. 07

    Inspection

    Coating appearance, continuity and thickness are checked before the finished component is released.
